Paulina's Burrito
Paulina has traveled halfway around the world, lived in Japan, and visited every country in Europe and the Americas – only El Salvador and Honduras are left, she says – and she knows well what it’s like to miss home. “You can bring your country with you through food, feel its taste and smell,” she believes. For the past 17 years, Paulina has brought a taste of Mexico to the streets of São Paulo after abandoning her career as a visual artist and handicraft seller at fairs. Her accent might be misleading, but she was born in Chile: “I’m Latina, proud of my language, culture, and cuisine. The Mexican community embraced me,” she says, showing her arm adorned with Mexican skull, chili pepper, and taco tattoos. The fact is her burrito is a success, and the lines can be long to try it. The homemade tortilla is filled with shredded meat, bean paste with tomatoes, avocado, lettuce, sour cream, and pico de gallo, a type of Mexican salsa – all made by her at home. “Here, it’s lunch, but in Mexico, they have it for breakfast,” she explains. Let’s say the delicacy is indeed a generous lunch – starting with its name: “burrito,” which means little donkey in Spanish, probably referring to the large amount of filling a “burrito” can carry.
