Betânia’s Lobster

Maceió

Betânia brings joy to tourists on the most famous and busiest beach in Maceió. At the fresh fish market in Pajuçara, just a few meters from her kiosk, they buy their lobsters and bring them to her to prepare. “I’ll make it the way the customer wants,” she announces. Betânia set up the kiosk 30 years ago after losing her job as a kitchen helper. She knows that the sweet and delicate flavor of lobster requires simplicity: she seasons it with salt, a pinch of cumin, and cooks it with a few slices of onion. The delicacy is then served at the tables on the promenade and the sand, where tourists enjoy it while admiring the rafts departing into the calm sea of Pajuçara, heading to the natural pools. “I don’t know what it is, but people love my food,” she says.
