Curinga’s Caipirinha

Rio de Janeiro

The counter of Récion Gama Filho is just over one meter wide and is located on the sidewalk of Rua Joaquim Silva, near the Arcos da Lapa. Dressed as a joker, with a hat and decorated T-shirt, he juggles with his improvised shaker. Meanwhile, he talks, sings, talks, laughs, talks, and makes caipirinhas. He is so active that it’s hard not to notice him. And after trying one of his drinks, it’s impossible to forget him. He is considered one of the pioneers of caipirinha in Lapa. “I’ve been here for ten years. I’m respected for that,” he observes. Around the Rei do Limão, the clientele waits for refreshing and delicious drinks. The “caipirinha do curinga,” the flagship drink, combines lemon and passion fruit: “I learned it on my own, watching bartenders in restaurants and taverns.”
