Lateefat’s Jollof

Rio de Janeiro

While Nigeria suffers at the hands of Boko Haram, an Islamic organization that has been terrorizing the country for ten years, Nigerian culture thrives in Brazil through the hands of the friendly Lateefat, who has been living in Rio since 2015. Lateefat, a refugee from the civil war, cooks and sells joyful, colorful, and tasty food at gastronomic fairs. She serves popular Nigerian ingredients and recipes, accompanied by an inevitable smile. A typical dish from her homeland includes black-eyed beans, Jollof rice, shrimp, braised and fried beef, fried plantain, and spices such as onions, bell peppers, ginger powder, curry, paprika, palm oil, and cinnamon. It all resembles the cuisine of Bahia, which has a strong African influence. Her food and friendliness have won her many fans in Brazil who have helped promote her dishes on social media and hire her for events. They even organized a baby shower for her fourth child, João, in partnership with friends and institutions.
