Rasta's Caipirinha

Salvador

Working on Porto da Barra Beach for 21 years, Aloísio has been surviving from selling “Caipirinha do Rasta” for 8 years. Before making a living with the genuinely Brazilian drink, Aloísio was a craftsman and made a living selling bead bracelets and necklaces on the same beach, but the financial return was small. In the twist of fate, he faced his wife’s pregnancy, and as the sales wouldn’t provide for the family, he decided to cut his dreadlocks and look for a job. His search, however, was not successful, so he continued as a craftsman until one day, seeing a beachgoer drinking a caipirinha, he saw an opportunity to improve his situation. He decided to make a drink cart and take it to the beach. The venture, still without a name, was a success; on the first day, he sold 90 caipirinhas: “It’s something in my blood; I was meant to do it since the day I was born,” says Aloísio with great pride. Since customers called him “Rasta” so much, he decided to name his venture “Caipirinha do Rasta.” A resident of the Barra neighborhood, Aloísio wakes up early and goes by bike to get fruits at Feira de São Joaquim, the largest and most popular market in Salvador. He leaves the vodka, cachaça, ice, and sugar for purchase at markets near his home. Aloísio has created several drinks, and among the most sought-after are passion fruit with lime and kiwi with mint. The drinks cost R$ 10.00 and come in 500 ml cups. Due to a new city hall administration, his cart was prohibited from moving on the beach, and he, a registered street vendor in SESP (Public Safety Secretariat), lost 60% of his sales. Currently, Aloísio keeps his cart in a rented space, which is together with other vendors in the area. He prepares the drinks always to the sound of Reggae, which is his favorite music style. “Before, I used to play music from the cart, but with the city hall prohibition, I had to stop.” Walking on the sand with a tray and a promotional banner in his hands, Aloísio captures customers and delivers the drinks they ordered. Before having his cart removed from the sands, at the end of each day, Aloísio used to clean the beach: “I saw it as my mission, but now, without the cart, I leave the work to the city hall’s people to do.”
