Vegan Bobó by Creative Commes

São Paulo

For Raquel, food is synonymous with resistance and a tool for occupying public spaces, exchanging affection, and fighting for the end of waste and the democratization of real food. Being on the streets selling her vegan bobó is a form of struggle for her – fighting for the end of patents and copyrights, hence the name inspired by the NGO Creative Commons. Raquel’s activism starts with sourcing the ingredients, collected for free at the street market, among the food that would end up as waste. On the ground floor balcony of her townhouse in Perdizes, she lights a fire under a huge pot and prepares the bobó: shimeji mushrooms, bell pepper, onion, tomato, plantain, coconut milk, palm oil, ginger… all mixed with yam broth seasoned with annatto. Finally, lots of coriander. The aroma fills the square in front, and within minutes, the neighborhood comes to taste the bobó served in coconut shells, with rice, and accompanied by homemade jambu cachaça. “It’s affection, it’s grandma’s food, it’s my ancestry greeting yours,” says Raquel, who learned to cook “out of hunger and scarcity.” Not surprisingly, Raquel’s profession now is producing real and tasty food, avoiding waste, and selling it in the most democratic space possible: the street.
